A startup company focused on geothermal energy turned to L&A for patent and license evaluation, intellectual property due diligence, and a global freedom to operate opinion in a crowded field. At the beginning, the client was in “deep stealth” mode with only an option agreement to evaluate government-owned technology. L&A worked with the client to develop a study that satisfied investors’ needs, leading to impressive initial investment from the venture community. Key milestones were met and R&D strategy was further defined through identification of white space opportunities to shape the client’s own IP portfolio. The client went on to win one of the largest grants awarded in 2009 by the U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E).
