The newest version of OpenAI’s video-generation model Sora has come under fire recently with concerns of potential copyright infringement and backlash from copyright owners. This case further highlights the growing tension between the development of artificial intelligence technologies and intellectual property rights.

The company’s approach seems to have shifted rapidly since the updated Sora was released on September 30th, emphasizing an opt-in method for copyright owners for using their works in video creation.

OpenAI’s move from opt out to opt in with Sora “is a pretty significant shift,” according to Craig Smith, partner at Lando & Anastasi LLP.

“OpenAI and other companies have sort of gone forward with this idea that they don’t need to ask permission from people,” he said. He said the shift suggests OpenAI may treat copyrighted works “in a way that we would treat a person’s likeness.”
