L&A Co-Managing Partner Peter C. Lando sat down with Pat Murphy of Mass Lawyers Weekly to discuss the evolving role of AI in law firms, and the recent survey published by the Association of Corporate Counsel. While corporate legal departments are rapidly adopting generative AI, Peter notes that many law firms remain cautious. “Ultimately, there’s still going to be a need for the experience and reasoned judgment that lawyers provide.”

However, Peter also acknowledges the potential of AI to transform the legal profession, especially where efficiencies can be achieved in routine legal tasks like research and drafting. “As the corporate user adopts the technology in their day-to-day operations, the expectation will flow to outside counsel,” he says. “Maybe this is the moment — the tipping point — where the notions of billable hours and billable rates are reevaluated.”
